Today is Thursday, the topic is Wide Open and yesterday I promised that I would share Middle Son’s story of how they met. So without further ado:
How we met
The year was 1993, it was a warm summer evening on the eastern plains of Africa and Middle Son was on a top secret mission for the United States Government rescuing endangered albino baby elephants on the outskirts of a small Ethiopian village, Fiancé was on a mission trip drilling water wells in a town a few miles away. A few days into the trip, a small group of Somalian rebels operating out of the city of Mogadishu invaded the village Fiancé was in and took their mission leader hostage. After hearing their distress call over the radio, Middle Son sprung into action and ran 17 miles through the Ethiopian countryside – stopping only once to change a flat tire on an elderly woman’s bicycle. Upon arriving at the village he singlehandedly, armed with only a roll of duct tape, 3 and a half toothpicks and a limited edition vinyl of Cat Stevens’ “Tea for the Tillerman”, rescued the entire mission group from the rebels. At that very moment, Fiancé knew.. Middle Son was the one.
The real story? We were going to save you the tears, but it is pretty cute so we might as well share. We met almost 9 years ago on December 10th, 2004 at the local amusement park (I was 16 and Fiancé was 15). She was at a friend’s going away party and I was in town visiting a friend. The friend liked one of the girls on Fiancé’s golf team and I had talked him into going to the going away party at the park – little did I know, I was about to meet the girl I was going to spend the rest of my life with.
We went on a double date a few weeks later, and had our first real date on Febuary 15th, 2005 (after I called her dad and asked if I could take her on a date – yeah, how’s that for respectful?). It didn’t take long for us to realize that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together, which was a pretty cool feeling to have at such a young age.
They dated through the high school years and went off to the same college together ten hours from home. He graduated a semester before her, moved back home and started working and saving money. After she graduated, she also moved back to her home, started working and saving money. They’ll be getting married in 10 days after dating 9 years. I think they’ll do fine.
then (well, their early years, maybe 3rd year dating)
